Recently, a lobster Nasi Lemak from Tampines blew up all over the interwebs and everyone has been pining to get their own plate. The lobster Nasi Lemak there costs $22, a simple plate with nasi, sambal chilli, egg and of course, Lobster. Now, Chef Wan has his own rendition of the lobster nasi lemak and has just launched it at his restaurant in Esplanade! Together with a Lamb shank rendition as well, this nasi lemak is phe-no-me-nal (and also affordable)!

Balado Lobster Nasi Lemak

Balado Lobster Nasi Lemak ($23.9+*)

If you aren’t familiar, Balado is an Indonesian chilli sambal, well loved by the Malay community. It was my first time trying a Balado lobster so I too was unsure of what to expect. The plate of nasi lemak was huge! One plate itself took up about half the table and looks too massive for one to finish. But with that you can expect to really get a bang for your buck. Each plate comes served with belachan kang kong, egg, fragrant nasi lemak and his signature sambal.

Balado Lobster Nasi Lemak

The lobster is fleshy and easy to pull apart from it’s shell. The juicy and succulent lobster flesh pairs spectacularly with the homemade balado sauce, and together with a spoonful of fragrant rice, it creates a symphony in your mouth. The cherry on top? The homemade sambal sauce. A perfect blend of sweet and spicy, with fried ikan bilis mixed into it, add a small scoop with every mouthful and you will taste the true blue nasi lemak flavour.

Lamb Shank Nasi Lemak

Lamb Shank Nasi Lemak ($23.90+*)

Braised to tender perfection, the lamb shank nasi lemak is a definite must try for all you lamb lovers. The meat falls off the bone and coat each piece with the rich rendang gravy for a stellar spoon. The rendang gravy is rich and sweet but with a hint of spice at the end.

Lamb Shank Nasi Lemak

For those who are scared that the lamb has a very gamey taste, fret not as the lamb shank does not have any trace of that. The rendang gravy plus the sambal chilli combine to form a rich and hearty plate!

Assam Pedas Fish Head

Assam Pedas Fish Head ($23.90+)

Fish head curry is one of our national favourite dishes and Chef Wan’s rendition is also well loved by many. The assam flavour is strong which makes this rendition of fish head curry more sour and tart. It may come across as too sour for some, but for $23.90, you sure do get a bang for your buck. The fish head is succulent and full of fleshy meat. Glistening white meat together with pineapples and brinjals, a very good accompaniment for white rice or even on its own!

Tauhu Telur

Tauhu Telur ($14.90+)

This was the underdog on the table. The humble Tauhu Telur may be overlooked by many but is actually an unsung hero. The soft yet crispy egg tofu melts in your mouth and is light on the palate. The sweet sauce that is poured over the tauhu is sweet yet has a slight spicy kick at the end. The crispy bits that are sprinkled over the tauhu telur are little bits of fried heaven. The mixture of textures, and light but rich flavours takes you back to true blue Malay cuisine which is simply delectable.

Chef Wan’s Signature Sambal

The true hero of Chef Wan’s latest nasi lemak venture has got to be the signature sambal sauce, I could eat a whole tub by itself! A true master of authentic Malay food, Chef Wan’s latest menu additions are absolutely to die for!

*Nasi Lemak is currently on a promotional price till 2nd Jan 2018. Original price of Nasi Lemak is $35+
