The creation of the famous Unicorn Tears was actually a team effort. The idea started out from a Harry Potter fan girl and she wanted to name the drink Unicorn Blood. But that was not feasible as Disney had already trademark that name. Therefore, they had to settle for another body fluid A.K.A Unicorn TEARS.
Christine, the Business Owner of Dapper Coffee told us during an interview:
“Our philosophy in everything we do is to create reactions in people. If you work at the CBD area and just want a boring, straight forward cup of coffee you can literally go to any other cafe. We want to show you a good time when you are here. When someone makes a drink the brief is always “How can you make a drink that makes the person drinking it the happiest?” So we tend to have a lot of POW-WOW, Smoke, mirrors and stuff. The reaction to Unicorn Tears and Gold Brew has been really quite incredible so we are really pleased with that.”
So, there you have it, Unicorn Tears and Gold Brew are Happy Potions!
I’m sure we are all curious about how the drinks were actually made. However, this was kept a trade secret. After all, it wouldn’t be magic if everyone was able to replicate it. What they can tell us is that the research and development process for the drinks was surprisingly short. It was actually impromptu. The story of how it all happened was when they were playing around behind the bar and realised “Wow, look at this. It looks amazing.”. Just then, a customer walked in and asked ‘“What is that?” and they replied “Unicorn Tears?”. He asked for a price and they randomly quoted $10 and the customer said “I’ll take one”. He sat down in the cafe and before they knew it, the whole vicinity was curious about what he was drinking. Soon enough, everybody wanted a glass of Unicorn Tears of their own. Then the crew thought to themselves: “Maybe we should bottle this up!”.

This cafe also pride themselves to have really good coffee because despite of all the smoke and mirrors, they do care about coffee. They also have signature drinks that are coffee based. For example, their cold brew which had a lot of work put into it. It took about 6 months of research and development as compared to their Gold Brew which took only about a week. They also have a drink called Earl Grey Yuan Yang which is half Earl Grey Tea and half Espresso with lavender flowers on it. Christine mentioned that this was her favourite drink. They also serve cakes that not only looks good but taste great too! The owners of Dapper Coffee are fun-filled people and when asked “Why should people visit your cafe?” they replied:
“Basically if you are really bored with hipster cafes and marble table tops or wood and white and all that stuff, come to another hipster cafe where everything is dark and copper.”
Another very hipster thing about this cafe is that it turns into a bar at 5pm. This means that you can enjoy a cup of normal coffee at 4pm followed by an Irish coffee at 5pm. AWESOME!
