By now, you must’ve heard of those famous Japanese cream buns sold in Hattendo. It is located at the Japanese food enclave in Tanjong Pagar, right opposite Japan Rail Cafe! The neatly packaged buns, clean environment and polite Japanese staff will make you feel like you’ve been transported to Japan!
So here are the much raved-about cream buns [1pc $2.50; 5 pc set with all flavours $12 (limited promotion)] in all its glory. It comes in five different flavours:
- Whipped Cream
- Azuki Beans
New on the menu is the Melon Bun ($3) which is actually a traditional Japanese pastry! (Fun fact: It got its name because it resembles a melon due to its crispy and hard exterior, and not because it’s melon-flavoured) This pastry comes with the 3 most popular flavours of the cream buns, namely: matcha, azuki beans and custard! As compared to the cream buns which is both soft on the outside and inside, the melon bun is hard on the outside and soft on the inside. The crispiness and buttery flavour on the outside gives the bun some much-needed texture and flavour, making it a recipe for deliciousness.
Rosti in a Japanese cafe?! Yup, it’s true. As if Hattendo isn’t good enough already, they have just added rosti into their menu – two really palatable ones I must say. First, we had the Sour Cream & Smoked Salmon Rosti with Salad and Cream Bun (any flavour) ($15). Everyone knows sour cream goes well with rosti, so when they have smoked salmon on top of it, you know it’s going to be even better. This mouth-watering dish tasted savoury with a tinge of sourness along with the charred taste from the salmon to top it all off.One of my favourites from this place would have to be the Okonomiyaki & Sausage Rosti with Salad and Cream Bun (any flavour) ($13). One word: Scrumptious. There’s just something about sausages with rosti that makes it so great. Topped with seaweed and mayonnaise sauce, the rosti tastes just like marriage in your mouth – a must-try!
For those healthy food-lovers out there, they have salads! There’s the new Hearty Salad ($7) which has oranges and eggs in it, and many more to choose from. All of the salads come with homemade croutons! You can even choose to place your salad in a mason jar for some Instagram aesthetics.
If you want to opt for something simple yet tasty, try the Iberian Ham with Mozzarella Sandwich ($8). It may seem like an ordinary sandwich, but you can bet that this sandwich is anything but ordinary. It tastes exactly like how a premium sandwich should taste – especially with that mozzarella oozing out of that sandwich!
If you haven’t already tried Hattendo, it’s time to make your way down here to try their new menu! You won’t regret it.
