Situated at Serangoon Garden Way (a short 3-minute walk from Chomp Chomp), is Steam Box, a family-friendly restaurant that offers Hong Kong’s most popular food trend – steam-potting!
Food here is cooked by high-speed steaming right before your very eyes! All ingredients at Steam Box are served raw to ensure maximum freshness. Due to the nature of steaming the food, you can be guaranteed a healthy meal worth indulging in!
Steam Box has introduced 6 new enticing dishes for their Chinese New Year menu this year. The new Phoenix Prawn was juicy and plump, while the Scallop with Cheese and Bacon was an interesting combination worth a try! The Smoked Duck Slices were thick and paired nicely with Steam Box’s homemade Black Pepper sauce. Stuffed with crabstick and vermicelli, the Vietnamese Fresh Spring Rolls were light and easy on the stomach while the Bacon-wrapped baby Potatoes packed a more hearty punch. Our favourite had to be the Stuffed Cabbage Rolls, which included minced pork, diced prawn, mushroom and water chestnut, all wrapped into one. Fret not! Although these items are on the Chinese New Year Menu, these items are here to stay, even after the festive season has passed.
So how does steam-potting actually work? Firstly, a mixture of rice and other ingredients will be poured into the base of the pot to make the porridge. We tried 2 of the special Chinese New Year porridges, the Eight Treasures Porridge and the Double Happiness Chicken Porridge!
The Eight Treasures Porridge consists of pumpkin, sweet potato, red dates, water chestnut, shitake mushroom, corn, brocolli and carrot while the Double Happiness Chicken Porridge is filled with juicy chicken chunks.
A metal tray with holes is then placed atop the pot to allow the juices of the steamed ingredients to flow down into the porridge. All ingredients are served on different coloured plates, an indication of the time required to fully cook them.
After enjoying the steamed dishes, lift the tray to reveal your porridge! The juices from the previously steamed dishes would make the porridge full of flavour, a great way to end your meal!
