Long snaking queues are a common sight along the main entrance, and the smell of fresh Japanese tea lingers in the air. The team of Japanese retsuarants at Suntec City’s Eat At Seven have a new guest – Katsudon Hanakatsu. From the same people behind Kohaku, Katsudon Hanakatsu is an intimate restaurant which specialises in serving up quality Katsudons.

The Dish

The menu is simple, you get to choose between the spicy or non spicy HA-NA Katsudon ($13.50) . Makes life a lot simpler doesn’t it? And not to worry, portion sizes here are large enough to fill a hungry man who just completed an intense workout at the gym.

The bowl comes with 6 pieces of Pork and Chicken, arranged to look like a flower atop a bed of sticky Japanese rice lathered with their luscious homemade Ankake Sauce. The sauce here is poured over the rice to ensure that the Katsu will retain their crispy texture and not go soggy.

The star of the dish is definitely the Katsu. Perfectly coated and fried to the ultimate golden brown, the meat is still juicy and tender with every bite. Seasoned with their special inhouse blend, the dish is elevated to a new level and tingles your tastebuds to life. The spicy option really packs a punch too. Genereously seasoned with the Sachimi spices, the heat grows gradually at the back of your mouth but yet you will want to go back for seconds. We caught some people chugging down ice water after they tried the spicy bowl so if your spice tolerance is low, definitely opt for the non spicy bowl.

You also have the option to choose between the classic Japanese white rice or the multigrain rice. Definitely an added plus point especially if you are attempting to take on a healthier diet.

A simple menu and concept, but nothing about this tastes simple at all. The complexity and depth of flavours is truly a Japanese speciality and has been perfected in the form of a Katsudon. Perfect for an intimate date or a small and cosy get together, we definitely recommend Katsudon Hanakatsu.
