Some of the ice cream flavours that Kindred Folk boasts is not necessarily one that would think of trying. Wasabi..? Cereal Milk..? Well by sheer hard work, these unique ice creams flavours has not only kept customers coming back for more, but sees new people fall in love with them everyday. The owner, Cheryl, is an ice cream connoisseur (not officially, but with those flavours, she might as well be one). Never in my life would I have thought that I would enjoy a Watermelon-Kalamansi ice cream, or even think about trying a Wasabi ice cream but obviously staying inside the box isn’t Cheryl’s forte.

Charcoal Cone & Waffle

A staple in ice cream shops are their cones and waffles, and inmost cases the taste of the cone and waffle alone can drastically affect the overall ice cream experience. Kindred folk offers the option of cone and waffles both of which are Charcoal flavoured. Charcoal has turned into a very popular flavour option because of all it’s health benefits with cafes all over not wanting to miss out on this trend. The charcoal cone and waffles in Kindred folk however, taste a little more special as compared to other places that I have been to.

Charcoal Cone + Watermelon Kalamansi

The cone has a slight more earthy and grounded taste, but still light. There was also a very fresh crisp sound that accompanied every time I snapped a bit of the cone off. We tried the cone with the Watermelon-Kalamansi sorbet solely for it’s pretty color contrast, but was surprised at the complementary flavours. The flavour of the ice cream was absolutely to die for. You’ll first get the sweet taste for the watermelon before the tartness from the kalamansi seeps in. Texture wise, this has the classic sorbet texture. Soft and icy. The entire flavour overall tastes really refreshing and sour, making this one perfect for a hot and sunny day.

Charcoal Waffle + Roasted Peanut

We opted for the Roasted Peanut flavour together with our waffle. No special reason except that peanut flavoured ice cream is yet again, not something you see everyday. However, this ice cream completely blew our minds. Not only did the ice cream taste like peanut butter, it also had that smooth, silky and slightly sticky texture that peanut butter has. Almost as though it was literally frozen peanut butter. The milky creamy taste kicks in at the back giving the ice cream a nice soft finish. The waffle tasted like the cone, but has achieved the ultimate waffle texture – crispy on the outside but soft and slightly chewy on the inside. Which made it the perfect pairing for the ice cream.

Mantou + Matcha Gao

Mantou

Pairing together Mantou and ice cream had always been an unspoken dream. I was always a massive fan of mantou and condensed milk, and knowing that I could get ice cream (my fav dessert) together with mantou was an opportunity that I was not going to miss. This tasted exactly like what I was hoping for. Crispy, soft and doughy mantou, together with cold and rich ice cream. For this, we opted for the Matcha Gao, and Gao is was. Unlike many matcha flavoured items which are overly sweet, the matcha ice cream here held it’s bitter taste but and was super rich and thick. Freshly fried when ordered, the piping hot mantou caused the ice cream to melt fast which meant we had to gobble it up quickly. Definitely one not to be missed, make sure that you add on a mantou to your ice cream!

The cafe doesn’t just stop as delicious ice cream. The interior design of this space makes it a true Insta worthy cafe, even decked out with a hammock for you to relax on! A true hidden gem, Kindred Folk has definitely earned itself a returning customer in me and you too should try it for yourself!
