Neartest MRT: Clarke Quay

Clarke Quay, an area known for it’s vibrant nightlife and chilled-out-TGIF vibes. But yet that district has some proper sit down restaurants like Hai Di Lao and Talay Thai. The latest addition to the restaurant line up is Long Jiang Classic Noodle and Congee House. A part of the Long Jiang group, this restaurant focuses on comforting pots of congee and classic Chinese fare like XO Crab Beehoon. A place that you can consider for the annual reunion dinner.

Pan-fried Stuffed Aubergine with Abalone Sauce

Pan-fried Stuffed Aubergine with Abalone Sauce ($14)

This looks like your typical Yong Tau Foo Eggplant but on first bite you’ll know that it’s not. The pork stuffing is homemade and the eggplants are drenched in hot oyster sauce. One bite in and you’ll be treated to a burst of flavours and textures. The pork stuffing was juicy and seasoned perfectly. The eggplant was soft and contrasted the texture of the pork really well. Coat each mouthful with the oyster sauce and this dish and perfect with a spoonful of rice!

Braised Shark Head

Braised Shark Head ($78/kg)

This item is an off the menu item that is totally worth the try! Everyone is familiar with shark’s fin or shark’s meat but not many know of shark head. (At least I didn’t until I tried it here) And if you are trying to picture wat kind of meat it is, scratch it all off because shark head is basically gelatin. A very similar texture to the pork trotter which you find in Bak Kuh Teh stalls! Covered in a homemade bean sauce, this is a dish that I found myself unknowingly reaching out for. The gelatinous meat and the rich and hearty bean sauce paired really well together and trust me, you’ll have to try this to understand yourself!

Nutritional Crocodile broth

Nutritional Crocodile broth ($68 -4 pax)

Yes I know, crocodile meat??? It scared me at first too, and honestly felt like a piece of exotic meat. The fact that the scales of the crocodile was still visible on its feet did not help. I knew I had to conquer this with an open mind so, the soup was the first hurdle. Surprisingly, the soup was absolutely delicious! A peppery broth with a rich aftertaste and a hint of chinese herbs.

Nutritional Crocodile broth

The crocodile meat itself? Tasted like pork! The crocodile meat had both meaty portions and gelatinous parts which made this soup reminiscent of Bak Kuh Teh! If you love Bak Kuh Teh, definitely give this a try and step out of your comfort zone! Pssst, this is an off the menu item as well so ask any staff for this!

Mud Crab with Rice Vermicelli in XO Chicken Broth

Mud Crab with Rice Vermicelli in XO Chicken Broth ($48 – 3/4 pax)

One never goes wrong with XO crab! A classic favourite with Chinese families, and definitely my favourite from the wide spread we had. The brother tasted rich and sweet, and glided smoothly together with the vermicelli. The crab was succulent and full of meat. Mud Crab shells are generally easy to crack so you don’t have to worry about fighting with the crab shells or destroying the delicate crab meat.

Mud Crab with Rice Vermicelli in XO Chicken Broth

Get the perfect spoonful of XO broth, rice vermicelli and crab meat, and you will seriously float to food heaven. And if you’re lucky enough, you might even get crab roe from your crab!

Signature Ocean Treasures Porridge

Signature Ocean Treasures Porridge ($48- 3/4 pax)

And finally, the piece de resistance, The signature ocean treasures porridge which includes live prawns, mud crab, clams, dried scallop & crayfish. Yes, a pot of fresh seafood and comforting congee all in one. The congee itself has a rich taste that holds it owns, the hot hearty broth goes straight down your throat and warms up your belly.

Signature Ocean Treasures Porridge

The seafood helps elevate the flavour profile of the congee with it’s seafoody taste, and combine each spoonful of congee with a piece of seafood and you will have the perfect spoon of comfort food. Perfect for a cold rainy day!

Perfect steaming congee or slurp worthy XO crab rice vermicelli, Long Jiang Classic Noodle and Congee House is the place to go to, be it with your friend or your whole extended family! Plus, it’s open till 4am in the morning so this could even be a late night supper option!
