Tucked away into the depths of Science Park is Pipe District, a pipe themed cafe which has everything made out of pipes. When I say everything, I mean everything. From the tables, chairs and even the interior decor, everything is made up of pipes. The tables are even equipped with a steering for you to adjust it’s height! Talk about innovative decor heh.

Pipe District also boasts to be an entertainment centre rather than just a food cafe. The alfresco dining area has a pool table which is free for all to play. Situated right in front of the bar, order up your favourite cocktail and hit up a game of pool! Not forgetting the two darts machines and a full sized foosball table in the indoor dining area for you to play with while waiting for your food to be served.

The food? Well their extensive menu give customers the ability to customise it to fit their tastebuds. A simple dish like a salad can be created into more than 10 different versions with the various toppings, sauces and even salad leaves available. Make the dishes fit to your cup of tea which will promise you a dining experience that you won’t regret.

Australian Dry Aged Beef

Australian Dry Aged Beef on Himalayan Salt Block ($32)

You cannot go wrong with dry aged beef, let alone when it’s served on a himalayan salt block. The beef is dry aged in house so you know that you are getting the freshest and best quality of meat. The salt block acts not only as the cooking element but also as it’s seasoning. As the beef gets cooked on the block, the salt will seep through it and get absorbed into the meat. You also have full control as to how well done you would like your beef to be. Your first bite will bring you to absolute heaven. The beef melts in your mouth and glides down your throat.

The salt that has seeped into the meat gives it perfect seasoning and the meat itself is juicy and succulent. Served alongside a scoop of mash potato, a red wine reduction and brown sauce which all pair perfectly with the stunning meat.

Salted Egg Butter Chicken Wings

Salted Egg Butter Chicken Wings (6pc/$10)

This is one of their signature items on the menu, and what many people rave about. Their menu houses 7 other sauces as well for you to choose from and do include unique ones like Parmesan Sweet Garlic and Marmite Honey. Their salted egg wings however aren’t exactly the same as the ones from elsewhere. The sauce is slightly thicker and has a more buttery taste to it, but still has the undertones of salted egg. The chicken wings itself were perfect. The skin was crispy but the meat itself was still juicy and tender. Be sure to eat this while it’s hot!

US Scallop and Prawn Salted Egg Cream Pasta

US Scallop & Prawn Salted Egg Cream Pasta ($20)

Salted egg pasta probably isn’t a very foreign concept anymore but not many people have nailed it. Pipe district’s rendition isn’t exactly 10/10 but their blend of salted egg and cream is really smooth. Hitting the notes between salted egg pasta and carbonara, this pasta is smooth and creamy.

You won’t fall short on the seafood either. Thick plump pieces of scallops and prawns cover the top of the pasta. Definitely gives you a bang for your buck! Though I personally would’ve preferred something a little stronger in the salted egg department, I really appreciated how they tried to blend the sauce into a smooth mixture that anyone can enjoy. Regardless if you like salted egg or not.

Charcoal Fish and Chips

Charcoal Fish & Chips ($18)

Many people have also ventured into the art of using charcoal but to achieve the look of charcoal, one does not neccesarily use actual charcoal. At pipe district though, they use actual charcoal powder to blend into the batter which gives the fried fish that dark and earthy grey color. It doesn’t compromise much on taste and the charcoal is a rather muted flavour which allows for the fish to shine. We had the salmon which was a perfect flaky pink. Paired alongside we had sweet potato fries, which are my personal favourite form of fries (no hate). The fries were crispy on the outside but soft and warm on the inside. No worries if you aren’t a fan of sweet potato fries though, their menu is fully customisable so you can pick and choose what accompaniment you would like!

Despite pipe district’s out of the way location, the games, unique decor, and customisable menu is worth a visit! Highly recommended is the dry aged beef. That is truly an experience not to be missed.
