Hold up, did someone say WHITE CURRY?! We were equally taken aback upon hearing that there was a dish made of White Curry. The Japanese curry we are all familiar with is brown with a tinge of spiciness and sweetness.
Tengawa Hokkaido White Curry is the first restaurant in Singapore to sell Hokkaido white curry. White curry is made using fresh Hokkaido milk without tumeric. It tastes almost the same like the original brown Japanese curry, except that you can taste the spice more distinctly.
Located in Millenia Walk, this shop offers only 3 set dishes on their menu because they help to be focused and serve quality food to their customers. Each set comes with a different white curry dish, a truffle oil chawanmushi, miso soup and pickles.
Set A is the Premium Ebi Fry White Curry Set ($16.80). The breading was superb, light and crisp, without it being too thick.
Set B is the Juicy Japanese Style Hamburg White Curry Set ($15.80). The Hamburg was thick and juicy, blending well with the white curry.
Set C was my favourite. It is the Crunchy Chicken Katsu White Curry Set ($15.80) with deep fried, well-breaded chicken cutlet. Though it is a very common dish, somehow the white curry just made everything slightly sweeter and paired everything well together.
The free-flow pickled were equally impressive and a very good side-dish to munch on while waiting for your meal. A special mention to their Truffle Oil Chawanmushi which really awed me. The texture was smooth and silky. The tinge of truffle taste really made me very impressed and I would just crave for more!
My overall experience here was great because of how they put so much focus and attention into serving high quality food. I expected both white and brown curry to taste similar but I am surprise that there is still a distinction, with white curry being sweeter.
Now, we no longer need to travel all the way to Hokkaido to have a taste of its authentic white curry!
